The Regatta of Ancient Maritime Republic (Regata delle antiche Repubbliche Marinare)

Held every four years, this event was first held in 1956 to commemorate the past glories of the ancient maritime Republics. The sites of the regatta rotate between the sea destinations of Amalfi and Genoa, Venice's lagoon and the river in Pisa. Prior to the race is a procession of people in costumes specific to historical events that occurred in their region. Teams paddle against the current over a distance of 1,800-2,000 metres, in boats colourfully decorated with the figureheads of their Republic. The next regatta is set to take place in the year 2008.
