The wealthy and eminent Spinola family, of Genovese origins, only recently, in 1958, donated their family palace and art collection to the city. Works of art are shown in opulent, yet comfortable, rooms, the curaters having faithfully left things as they were when the family lived and worked there. The Spinolas, merchants and bankers, amassed a number of works, including several examples from Dutch and Flemish artists, as well as important Italian names such as Antonello da Messina and Van Dyck.
