When occupied from the 19th to the 20th century by the Royal House of Savoy, Genoa's Royal Palace underwent some renovations from the original, 17th century building built for the Balbi family. Stuccoed, frescoed and jammed with souvenirs from the family's many trips abroad, the palace is certainly fit for royalty. The rooms are described in English along with several other languages. St. Augustine Museum of Ligurian Architecture and Sculpture The cloisters of the 13th century church and monastery dedicated to St. Augustine are all that is left following the Second World War, save for a campanile. Roman columns, statues and other items of architectural interest from around the area are displayed throughout the minastery's gardens. Among the treasures are a collection of panels from the crypt of Margherita of Brabant, wife of the German emperor Henry IV, who died in Genoa in 1312 while travelling to Rome for her husband's coronation.
